KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 8 — Construction of a tactical (Compact 200) bridge at Sungai Limbungan, Kemaman, Terengganu is expected to begin as early as today, as soon as all the building materials needed arrive at the location.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said a squadron of the Royal Engineers Regiment based in Gemas, Negeri Sembilan who will be building the bridge were already on site.
“If there are no obstacles, construction of the bridge can proceed. This bridge is important to provide a link to areas affected by floods there so that relief operations to bring food, medicine and other essentials can be carried out,” he said.
Kemaman is one of the worst hit districts in the flood disaster in the east coast of the peninsula in the wake of the Northeast Monsoon season. The tactical bridge needs to be built as a five-metre stretch of the riverbank there has collapsed.
Hishammuddin said this when met by reporters at the cafeteria of the Gleneagles Hospital here while taking a break from his ward.
He has been admitted to the hospital to undergo angioplasty for a blocked artery. — Bernama
