KANGAR, Nov 20 — The significant jump in job applications to the Public Services Department (PSD) proved that people were more confident of the sector, Tan Sri Mahmood Adam said today.

As of October, the PSD received about 2.04 million applications compared to just over a million last year, he said after an interactive session with the heads of federal departments’ statutory bodies, associations and non-governmental organisations in Perlis, here today.

Commenting on civil servants who carried out part-time businesses to supplement their income, Mahmood said they could do so provided there was no conflict of interest and it was approved by the department heads.

In conjunction with the session, the PSD held a career carnival covering online job applications, career briefings and interview skills, participated by 22 government agencies and departments.

About 3,000 people attended the daylong carnival from 9am to 4pm.

Meanwhile, according to a press release issued by the PSD, it had appointed 48,345 federal civil servants from January to October this year comprised of 31,551 permanent positions and 16,794 contract staff.

As for Perlis, 28,257 job applications were recorded between January 1 and October 31 which was almost double compared to 15,175 last year.

The same period this year saw 3,605 registered candidates called for interviews, out of which 429 were offered jobs.

Also present at the even was Perlis deputy secretary to the government Zulkafli Ahmad. — Bernama
