KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 31 — The man suspected to have extorted money from people by sending them live bullets with a note inscribed with the number “04” has been arrested.
The 43-year-old “businessman” is said to have targeted random victims living in upscale areas in Penang.
State deputy police chief Datuk A. Thaiveegan said police arrested the man at a nightspot in Batu Ferringhi in an early morning operation yesterday.
“We are still trying to determine the exact number of those who had fallen victim to the suspect,” he said.
“We believe he has been making a lucrative living using the same modus operandi for the past six months.”
Thaiveegan said police were still investigating the case and the remand period was yet to be determined.
On Saturday, a salesman and his neighbours in Jalan Masjid Negeri received a rude shock when they received envelopes containing a live bullet and a note demanding RM20,000.
The note warned them against lodging a police report if they valued their lives.
Fearing for their safety, they quickly lodged police reports over the incident.
