YAN, Oct 23 — Supporters of political parties contesting in the Sungai Limau state seat by-election, especially those from outside the area, have been reminded to respect the local culture.

Election Commission (EC) chairman, Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof, said the residents of Sungai Limau respected each other, therefore the supporters of Barisan Nasional (BN) and PAS needed to respect their refined culture.

He was speaking to reporters after visiting Dewan Datuk Madi, the nomination centre for the Sungai Limau by-election.

Abdul Aziz said the EC was satisfied with the preparations for the by-election and hoped the process would be smooth from the campaigning period right until polling on November 4.

Meanwhile, traffic flow along the main road, Jalan Pantai Murni heading towards Dewan Datuk Madi was under control and smooth this morning.

Kedah police chief, Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim said policemen were stationed around the nomination centre to ensure a smooth nomination process.

“The Yan police district headquarters in near the nomination centre. The Royal Malaysian Force air unit will do aerial monitoring of the process to ensure security is under control,” he told reporters, here, today.

Ahmad also advised the supporters of both contesting parties to respect the local culture.

The Sungai Limau by-election is held following the death of the constituency’s incumbent assemblyman Tan Sri Azizan Abdul Razak, who was also former Kedah mentri besar, on September 26. — Bernama
