IPOH, 21 Oct — The number of flood victims in the Manjung district has increased to 838 people due to continuous rain.
Pantai Remis Fire and Rescue Department chief Mohd Asri Mohd Ariff said another evacuation centre was opened at Dewan Taman Bintang, Pantai Remis, today.
“A total of 146 victims from 38 families were moved into the centre this morning. Late yesterday afternoon an evacuation centre at Sekolah Agama Rakyat in Padang Serai was also opened to transfer 47 people from 12 families,” he said when contacted by Bernama, here.
He said residents in Taman Bintang and Kampung Ujung Pasir were forced to move because of continuous rain causing floods in Kampung Pantai Tin, Taman Pantai Wang, Kampung Tebuk Yan, Parit Marikan and Batu 13 Segari.
“The number of flood victims housed at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Batu evacuation centre today rose to 585 compared to 530 victims yesterday while in Dewan Orang Ramai Tebuk Yan the number has increased to 60 victims,” he said.
Meanwhile, in Kepala Batas 40 people staying in Pantai Kamloon and Bumbung Lima, have been displaced following heavy rain for more than three hours today.
Special Officer to Kepala Batas MP Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, Nazli Aziz said the floods worsened during high tide.
“The worst affected area was Bumbung Lima where water entered nine houses and 24 people had to be evacuated. Nine of them were moved to the Bumbung Lima multi-purpose hall and the rest stayed homes of relatives,” he told reporters after visiting the transfer of flood victims, here today.
He also donated basic necessities to the flood victims.
Meanwhile, in Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Shahbudin Yahaya said the number of flood victims evacuated to relief centres had increased from 300 yesterday to 400 people, this evening. — Bernama
