IPOH, Oct 14 — Perak Umno leader Datuk Hamidah Osman, who lost her Gopeng division Wanita head post on Saturday, is clinging on to one last bid to prolong her political career.

She is one of the 63 candidates vying for one of the 25 supreme council posts on October 19.

A party insider said Hamidah, who is also Wanita Umno information chief, faces a tough fight.

“Her defeat was not a surprise to many, judging by the sentiments prior to the general election pertaining to her candidacy,” the insider said.

The former state exco member is known to be vocal, but has been keeping a low profile since she lost her Sg Rapat state seat in the 13th general election to PAS newcomer Radzi Zainon.

But despite the defeat, the controversial Hamidah maintained she still has strong backing from the party.

Hamidah’s infamous “ular dan India” (snakes and Indians) remark during the state assembly sitting in 2008 was among several controversial incidents which have haunted her.

Before the general election, she also allegedly manhandled Gopeng PKR incumbent Dr Lee Boon Chye during an argument between party supporters over the setting up of an operations centre in Batu Gajah.
