GEORGE TOWN, Sept 10 — Customs officers have seized syabu valued at RM1.48 million from a boat that sped off with them in pursuit and was abandoned in Teluk Kumbar, Penang Customs director Datuk Zulkifli Yahya said today.

He said the incident occurred at 4am yesterday when Customs officers and men on surveillance spotted a boat which they ordered to stop in the waters of Sungai Batu.

The people in the boat ignored the order to stop and sped off with the Customs officers and men in pursuit, he told a news conference today.

When the boat reached a rocky patch of beach, three men jumped from the boat and disappeared into the undergrowth, he said, adding that the Customs personnel went after them but could not find them in the dark.

“Three personnel from the Customs Marine Unit were slightly injured after they fell on the rocks during the chase,” he said.

Zulkifli said the officers inspected the boat and found a black package containing seven slabs suspected to be syabu, which was later found to weigh 7.4kg and to be worth RM1.48 million.

He said the officers seized the drug and the boat.

Zulkifli said it was not known from where the men had brought the drug and where they were headed to. — Bernama
