KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — The Gang 08 members who opened fire at two police officers during a hot pursuit on Tuesday are believed to have been terrorising Gombak, Selayang, Batu Caves and Ampang.

Police said yesterday the gang, led by a leader in his 20s, was not only involved in hijacking luxury cars but also other underworld activities, including extortion.

Gombak police chief ACP Abdul Rahim Abdullah said investigations were under way to establish the link between the arrested gang members and cases that took place in the four areas.

A hunt for the four remaining gang members was going on.

“They cover a huge territory. We have linked the gang to several cases of car robberies,” he said.

On the drama that unfolded during the wee hours of Tuesday, Rahim said: “It shows what they are capable of and how dangerous they are.

“We will do all we can to track down the remaining members.”

Among the gang members police are looking for are R. Lachumanan, 27, and S. Sathiyanathan, 21, both of whom were involved in the high- speed chase.

In the incident, two officers patrolling Selayang were alerted to a robbery nearby.

They spotted the suspects, who were in a Mitsubishi Triton, near Plaza Umno at about 1.40am.

During the high-speed chase, which ended in Rawang, one of the suspects opened fire on the patrol car from the backseat but missed.

The suspects then rammed the side of the police car, causing it to overturn.

Rahim said the chase was abandoned after the other patrol unit stopped to check on the two policemen in the overturned vehicle.

The suspects’ car was spotted in Jalan Ipoh three hours later.

Police moved in and detained three of the five occupants, all in their 20s.
