JOHOR BARU, Aug 11 — An express bus with 40 passengers skidded and overturned at KM52.7 of the North-South Highway injuring eight people today.
The 8.15 am mishap occurred as the bus was heading south from Alor Star, Kedah.
Kluang police head quarters, Traffic and Public Order Division head Asst Supt Azmi Suratman said the 40-year-old co-driver of the bus was believed to have tried to avoid a vehicle which had braked suddenly in front of him.
The bus skidded and overturned about 10 metres from the road, he said.
“The injured passengers, three Myanmar nationals, two Thais and three locals suffered minor injuries and were given outpatient treatment at the Kulaijaya Hospital,” he said when contacted.
Azmi said the road was rather slippery at the time due to rain and there was no element of negligence on the part of the driver who had just taken over from the main driver at the Machap rest area.
Meanwhile, in a 12.10am accident today, two men died on the spot while a woman suffered a broken right leg, when the car they were in skidded and crashed into a tree at KM26 Jalan Johor Baharu-Ayer Hitam, Kulaijaya.
Kulaijaya police chief Supt Zulkefly Yahya said the victims who died were the driver Wan Seng Thim, 41 and front seat passenger Yap Kok Chin, 44.
The woman, Chai Nyet Chiew, whose age was not determined, was sent to Kulaijaya Hospital.
The car was believed to have been heading from Kulaijaya to Senai when it skidded to the right and crashed into a tree on the road divider. — Bernama
