KUALA BESUT, July 24 — The polling centre for the Kuala Besut state seat by-election in Pulau Perhentian, here closed at 3pm.

Residents on the famous resort island cast their votes at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Pulau Perhentian which was opened at 8am.

The polling centre was closed two hours earlier compared to the other seven polling centres within Kuala Besut.

The by-election will see a straight fight between the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Tengku Zaihan Che Ku Abd Rahman and Endot@Azlan Yusof who is standing on the PAS ticket.

The by-election is being held following the death of the incumbent, Dr A. Rahman Mokhtar on June 26 due to lung cancer.

The official result of the by-election is expected to be announced after 10pm today to enable Muslim leaders and supporters of the contesting parties to perform their ‘tarawih’ prayers of the Ramadan fasting month.

This by-election has drawn great interest because of the likelihood of a hung state assembly in the event PAS wins the seat.

The opposition PAS and its ally, PKR, have 15 seats in the 32-seat Terengganu legislative assembly.

The BN had formed the state government after the last general election when it won 17 seats. — Bernama
