KUALA TERENGGANU, July 6 — Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, in his capacity as the Kuala Besut by-election director, will announce the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the state assembly seat on July 9.
“The state BN has shortlisted the eligible names and the DPM will announce the candidate on July 9,” Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said told reporters today.
He said Kuala Besut was BN’s stronghold and the 2,434-vote win at the May 5 polls was a comfortable buffer to defend the seat.
Commenting on the possibility of a hung state assembly if BN were to lose the seat, Ahmad said: “That will not happen.”
The Kuala Besut state seat became vacant following the death of its incumbent assemblyman Dr A. Rahman Mokhtar on June 26 due to lung cancer.
The Election Commission fixed polling for July 24 with nomination on July 12. — Bernama
