KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 2 — Malaysian artists are in need of platforms to showcase their work, from newcomers to industry veterans.

The Kita Orang Art Fair (KOAF) 2023 aims to showcase the works of students and local artists this Merdeka season with a theme of sustainability.

Opened on August 30, KOAF is the brainchild of Alice Chang of Lai Lai Art Gallery. According to Chang, her gallery strives to be more than just a commercial entity.

“For us, it’s not about profit, but about purpose. Every project we embark upon extends beyond the frame,” she said.

“We’re committed to giving back to the community, and we’re grateful for every opportunity to do so,” Chang told Malay Mail.

From now till September 12, a series of unique art shows will take place at the rooftop of Avenue K Shopping Mall.

KOAF features two art exhibitions, namely the INK|DUST|REAL Group Art Show highlighting artworks and sculptures from Calvin Chua, Low Khay Hooi, Soon Lai Wai, Lim Ah Cheng, Mustafa Salleh, Anna Karina and Chang.

Also featured at KOAF are outdoor installations skewed towards Sustainability/Conservation by education institutions Aswara, UiTM and Malaysian Institute of Art.

One of the art pieces at KOAFXincludes a Malaysian flag made from recycled ‘old-school’ ribbons of different lengths, representing our nation’s diversity.

Chang thanked Avenue K for giving her team the space to showcase emerging Malaysian art during Merdeka festivities.

“I thought it would be a good idea to do something in the city centre, and the space was available during this time of the year when we are celebrating our National Day and Malaysia Day,” she said.
