KUALA LUMPUR, Mar 30 — It’s a scene that'll move you to tears — a detainee trying to hug his daughter through the bars of his jail cell.
It was enough to move the policeman watching on, to do the unthinkable.
Policeman Handako, let detainee Aceng out of his jail cell so he and his visiting daughter, who looked to be about 4 years old, could properly hug each other.
The incident took place on March 25 at the Maro Sebo police station in Jambi Province, Indonesia, where Aceng was being detained.
Father and daughter were even allowed to kiss and cuddle while Handako captured the visit on his phone.
The video was later posted by local news portal undercover.id and quickly went viral.
Handoko explained that he had allowed it because Aceng, who was arrested for theft, had been well-behaved the entire time he was at the station.
Apparently, Aceng had even led group prayers with other detainees a few times.
“I couldn't help feeling sad, seeing him trying to embrace his child but being blocked by the bars, in the end I just opened up the cell — even if just for a little while — just so he could embrace his daughter under my watch,” said Handako, who was praised by netizens for his compassion.
Thankfully for Handoko and Aceng, the authorities deemed no laws were broken.
“It's fine to allow the detainee to meet his daughter if the police officer is sure that the detainee does not pose a safety risk or escape,” explained Ahmad Ramadhan of the Indonesian national police.
