KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 —An elderly Iranian man, who had not taken a shower for more than half a century, has passed away months after taking his first shower.

Dubbed the “dirtiest man in the world”, 94-year-old Amou Haji died on Sunday in the village of Dejgah in Iran, IRNA news agency reported.

Amou, who did not shower for 67 years, avoided showering as he feared it would bring him bad luck and make him sick.

However, a few months ago, villagers decided to wash him for the first time.

“Not long after, he fell ill and finally, on Sunday... he gave up his life,” IRNA reported quoting an unidentified local official.

Amou is said to be covered in soot and dirt, and had an aversion to soap and water.

Meanwhile, Daily Mail reported that Amou had previously said he chose this eccentric way of life after experiencing emotional setbacks in his youth before proceeding to isolate himself.

Besides cleanliness, Amou also had an aversion to fresh food and drink.

His favourite food was said to be rotten porcupine, and he would drink five litres of water a day, which he collected from nearby puddles, from a rusty oil can.

He would also eat roadkill besides smoking animal faeces out of an old pipe, rather than tobacco.

The house where he sought shelter was built by locals after seeing that he was sleeping in a hole in the ground.

He was also known to wear an old, decaying, war helmet to keep his head warm in the winter.

It was not immediately known what caused Amou's death.
