KUALA LUMPUR March 3 — For those familiar with Seremban, you would have come across Daily Homemade Fishball Noodles.
The eatery is popular for its pork lam noodles and fish balls. Currently there are two outlets in Seremban.
And now they are in KL. Last week, they opened a branch in the popular Taman Yulek area, operated by the owner's daughter. Apparently, the fish balls are brought in from their Seremban kitchen.
The greatest hit on the menu is the pork lam noodles or what they call chee lam fun. It's unique to Seremban, so it is arguably making its first appearance in the Klang Valley.
The pork lam noodles bear a striking resemblance to the famous dry beef noodles found at the Seremban market.
However this version is concocted from pork rather than beef. This means, those who do not eat beef can finally get to try this type of dry noodles.
It is distinctive as the noodles are doused in a thick gooey brown sauce. You also have thick pork slices.
On top, you get a sprinkle of toasted peanuts, sesame seeds and sliced ham choy. This version is served with chopped spring onions.
Usually the best noodle pairing is lai fun or smooth rice noodles as the dark, starchy gravy coats the strands beautifully, once you mix it together.
You're also served a bowl of broth and a fire engine red chilli sauce. Mix the chilli sauce with the noodles as it's got a distinct taste of vinegar.
The sauce can be rather spicy though so be cautious and add to suit your tolerance level.
It's an enjoyable bowl that I would happily slurp down. I do wish the pork used was a little less lean. Just a layer of fat would have given each piece of pork a much needed juicy texture.
I also ordered the Hakka mee which came with an assortment of fish balls, pork balls and fuchuk. The mix of items in the bowl seems to be random though.
Some people who visited earlier got four pieces but I happened to get five pieces that day. The menu lists down the availability of fish balls, fried fish balls, pork balls, fried pork balls, fish cake, fuchuk and wantan. You can order extra items too. It's RM6 for five pieces and RM12 for 10 pieces.
It can be risky naming your business after a dish on the menu as expectations will be high. Luckily the eatery lived up to my fish ball dreams.
The fish balls had a supple bounce, all thanks to the use of tofu fish. I wasn't a fan of the fuchuk though since it wasn't crispy after being soaked in the light tasting broth.
What bowled me over were the pork balls. Its rough texture meant it's a nice ratio of pork meat with fat that gave it a good bite. You have a little dried cuttlefish inside it to add a subtle fragrance. I would definitely order an extra bowl of the pork balls on my next visit.
For the Hakka Mee, the flavours were subtle as the springy egg noodles are topped with a clear broth, pork mince and lard fritters.
Other noodle choices include pork sauce noodles which use the thick gooey brown sauce from pork lam noodles. The dry fish ball noodles are also topped with minced pork and soy sauce. You can also go for the soup version.
The type of noodles can be customised to your preference, so select from lai fun, loh shue fun, beehoon, kuey teow or mee.
Prices for the noodles start from RM9.50 for the small portion. It's RM11.50 for the large portion except for the pork lam noodles which is RM11. If you want just the noodles with the minced pork topping, it's RM4.50 for a small portion and RM5.50 for the large portion.
