Worker injured as crane topples at the Grand Mosque in Mecca

MECCA, May 21 — A worker was injured when a crane being used in construction work in the Grand Mosque in Mecca, toppled yesterday, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the Sabq online news portal.

The Mecca region authority tweeted that the accident took place in a worksite in the mosque that is away from the routes used by worshipers and visitors.

In 2015, a total of 111 people were killed and 394 were injured when a crane toppled onto the Grand Mosque in Mecca.

The Saudi civil defence head said the accident was caused by strong winds and heavy rain.

The accident led to a long court case.

Some US$8.5 million (RM33.79 million) in compensation was paid out to the victims and their families. — Bernama
