SINGAPORE, July 28 — The first youth-led SGCommunityWalk on National Day will kick start more than 200 community celebrations throughout August, said People’s Association (PA) this morning.
The community walk, one of the highlights of this year’s celebrations, will take place on the morning of August 9.
Youth volunteers will lead 100,000 residents from various walks of life on more than 70 walks across Singapore — waving the national flag in unison.
Already community volunteers are planning ways to stand out.
Teck Ghee youths and residents plan to don customised footwear on the walk.
The volunteers will draw on and colour their shoes to express their hopes and wishes for the nation’s 51st birthday.
They also plan to engage residents in a mass singalong throughout the walk.
Over at Yew Tee and Limbang, pets will be joining the community walk, expected to have 2,000 participants. Residents are being encouraged to dress their pets in red and white.
More than 2,000 members of PA’s partners will join the SGCommunityWalks in different constituencies, such as the Singapore Scouts Association, Singapore Red Cross Society, National Police Cadet Corp, St John’s Singapore and Jamiyah Singapore.
Under the theme of Unity in Diversity, the community celebrations will be held throughout the month of August. In Bedok, umbrellas will be used to craft an SG logo; in Mountbatten, residents at Dakota Crescent plan to gather to reminisce before the old blocks are taken down; at Bukit Batok, a two-week carnival will feature themed performances; and at Canberra, families will paint small canvases to form a big family portrait.
PA expects to see more than 300,000 residents at the celebrations. — TODAY
