SINGAPORE, June 27 — The moment Singapore Airlines flight SQ368 landed at Changi Airport, passenger Amit Jain saw fire engines rushing towards the aircraft. He looked out of the plane’s window and saw flames billowing from the aircraft engine.

"I saw the flames getting worse and worse. By the time the fire engines reached, (there were) three to four feet high flames and I could see the wing turning black from the heat,” recounted Jain, 44, who was seated in Business class, near the engine.

"When we could see the flames rising, some people were trying to remove their bags from the overhead compartments, which was crazy,” he told TODAY.

"I heard a few people scream ‘Open the doors!’ and ‘Let us out!’ and they were standing in the aisle.

"I had to tell a lady, ‘if I had to run out I’m going to have to kick your bag out of the way’.”

Still, the situation was mostly calm as the pilot and crew reminded passengers to stay in their seats while airport emergency services tackled the fire, passengers said.

Flight SQ368, a Boeing 777-300ER, had departed from Singapore to Milan at about 2.25am today.

Some two hours into the flight, the plane had to turn back to Singapore due to an engine oil warning message.

After the plane touched down at Changi Airport at about 6.50am, the aircraft’s right engine caught fire. It was extinguished within minutes and there were no injuries to the 222 passengers and 19 crew on board, said an SIA spokesperson.

Passengers, who were disembarked after the fire and transported to the terminal building, were transferred to another aircraft later in the morning.

Jain, who is director of IT and enterprise resource planning at a multinational company, said the incident lasted about 20 minutes and passengers were "mostly calm” after that as they waited to board the next plane.

Lee Bee Yee, the owner of e-commerce luxury bags company, and her husband were seated in the Economy class.

"An hour into the flight, the smell of gas was in the air,” she said.

"When we landed at Changi, everyone clapped.”

When the right wing caught fire after the plane landed, passengers kept their cool, she said.

"People were more interested in taking photos outside,” said Lee, who posted videos and pictures of the incident on her company Facebook page.

"We are very grateful to the air crew and the firefighters,” she said.

"Everyone did a good job.” — TODAY
