SINGAPORE, June 8 — After a two-week decline, the number of dengue cases rebounded last week to 220, 22 higher than in the preceding week.
There are now 37 active dengue clusters in Singapore, with the biggest in the Geylang and Guillemard area.
There have been 86 cases reported there, including nine in the past fortnight.
Overall, there have been 8,373 dengue cases since January, and the authorities had warned that there may be more than 30,000 cases this year, much higher than the record 22,170 cases registered in 2013.
Five people have died of the mosquito-borne disease so far this year — a 47-year-old man who lived in Marsiling Rise, a 67-year-old man from Toa Payoh, a 63-year-old woman who was a resident of Bedok, a 73-year-old woman from Hougang, and in the latest case, a 79-year-old man who lived in Kaki Bukit.
Singapore also reported its first case of the Zika virus last month, which, like dengue, is transmitted via the Aedes mosquito.
The patient, a 48-year-old male permanent resident who lives in Bukit Timah’s Watten Estate, had travelled to Sao Paulo in Brazil and developed a fever and rash three days after he returned.
Although the patient has been discharged from hospital after making a full recovery, the authorities have said there is still a possibility of secondary infection. — TODAY
