JUBA, May 12 — A warning from the World Food Programme that more than five million people may go hungry in South Sudan.

The group says despite attempts to end more than two years war — a collapsing economy and erratic rainfall are contributing to a growing crisis.

Those who can, are moving on.

Farmer Aping Riang said: “I am leaving with anger and sadness because hunger is forcing me to leave my homeland. Your homeland is your homeland. If there was something to eat, I would not even think of leaving.”

Others wont leave — like the woman who promised her dead husband never to take their children back north.

Markets are still open, but in some cases prices have doubled.

Others rely on aid from the World Food Programme which says it needs more than US$200 million (RM803 million) to provide assistance over the next six month — assistance before the rainy season when many parts of the country will become inaccessible.

So they try to grow what they can — with some 2.8 million people already classified as “in crisis” — and about 40,000 thought to be suffering from an outright famine. — Reuters
