SINGAPORE, Aug 9 — It’s Singapore’s 50th birthday and thisNational Day will be like no other.

The Jubilee Weekend festivities, which started on Friday, will culminate with several major events today, including the broadcast of the late Lee Kuan Yew’s reading of Singapore’s Proclamation of Independence at 9am.

Just before the reading, the Singapore Civil Defence Force will sound a 30-second “All Clear” signal through its island-wide network of Public Warning System (PWS) sirens at 8:59:30pm.

This will be the first time the Proclamation will be heard in Mr Lee’s voice. Back in 1965, it was read out by a radio announcer.

Sunday will also be the first time the SCDF is sounding the siren twice in a day, with the second at 8.15pm to gather Singaporeans to recite the Pledge together.

The pre-parade segment at the Padang and Marina Bay area will commence at 5.12pm.
