SINGAPORE, March 13 — A fourth member of the group of teens who vandalised the rooftop of a Toa Payoh block was sentenced to 21 months’ probation for his offences.
Goh Rong Liang, 18, also has to perform 160 hours of community service and observe a 10pm to 6am curfew. His mother and sister also had to post an S$8,000 (RM21,403) bond to ensure his good behaviour.
The court heard that on May 6 last year, Goh and four friends stole four spray-paint cans from a parked lorry. The group intended to climb onto the rooftop of Block 85A Toa Payoh Lorong 4 to scrawl graffiti.
One of them, David William Graaskov, did not participate because he wanted to catch the last bus home.
The rest proceeded with their plan, spraying profanities insulting the People’s Action Party and the police. The total cost incurred for repainting the vandalised wall came up to S$128.84.
Two others in the group, Reagan Tan Chang Zhi and Chay Nam Shen, were earlier sentenced to 24 months’ probation.
The only member who has not been sentenced is Boaz Koh Wen Jie, whose case will be heard again in May.
Investigations revealed that the five had also trespassed on the rooftop of Marina Bay Suites on March 29 last year to chat and smoke.
The maximum penalty for vandalism is three years’ jail and/or a S$2,000 fine. Offenders may also face up to eight strokes of the cane.
Those caught trespassing may face up to three months in jail, a maximum fine of S$1,500 or both. Those convicted of theft may be jailed up to three years, fined or both. — TODAY
