SINGAPORE, Dec 19 — Two Indian nationals charged last week for allegedly taking part in the riot in Little India on Dec 8 had their cases re-mentioned in court yesterday, where they were further remanded for another week for police investigations.

Moorthy Kabildev, 24, and Sathiyamoorthy Sivaraman, 26, are said to have thrown a dustbin at the windscreen of the bus that ran over construction worker Sakthivel Kumaravelu. They also purportedly used a wooden stick to smash the windscreen and threw pieces of concrete, bottles and a metal drain cover at the windows of the bus.

To date, 23 Indian nationals charged with rioting last week have been remanded for an additional week. Their cases will be mentioned again on Monday. Another three will have their cases re-mentioned today. On Tuesday, two more Indian nationals aged 35 and 41 were charged for their role in the riot.

The Law Society yesterday said it will assign all but two of the 28 men charged pro bono legal representation under its Criminal Legal Aid Scheme. “Those lawyers are among the many who responded to the call for volunteers to represent the accused. The Law Society is grateful to these (and all) volunteers for their support and sacrifice,” said the society’s spokesperson.

The remaining two men are separately represented by lawyers R Kalamohan and Revi Shankar. — Today
