RIO DE JANEIRO, June 23 — The avalanche of goals at the World Cup has put the tournament on course to be the highest-scoring finals since 1970, FIFA said today.

As the tournament reached half-way with 32 of 64 matches completed yesterday, a total of 94 goals had been scored — an average of 2.94 goals per game.

It is the highest goals per game average since the celebrated 1970 finals in Mexico, when the figure stood at 2.97.

The 2014 number also far outstrips the 2.27 average of the 2010 South Africa World Cup, the lowest on record. — AFP
