MANAUS, June 15 — Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is doubtful to face Costa Rica after missing his side’s World Cup opener against England with an ankle injury, manager Cesare Prandelli revealed.

“He got hurt yesterday,” Prandelli said after seeing his side beat England 2-1 in their first Group D game in Manaus today.

“We tried for him to get better this morning, but we didn’t have time. I think within a few days he’ll be available. I can’t quantify the number of days. He had a sprain, so I don’t know.”

In Buffon’s absence, Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu deputised between the posts for Italy.
