AUGUST 30 — Selamat Hari Merdeka to all Malaysians.

As we commemorate Malaysia’s 59th year of independence, it is important to take this opportunity to reflect on the journey of our nation’s growth.

Indeed, we have come a long way and made great progress over the decades, growing from strength to strength as a multicultural and multiracial nation. Through it all, our founding fathers’ spirit of resilience, courage and unity have underscored our accomplishments, while helping us stay the course in the face of challenges.

That same drive for success was evident in our Olympic athletes this month, as they demonstrated sheer determination and grit in the sporting arena. Similarly, our unity was clear when we as a nation rallied behind our athletes to cheer them on with one voice. This was truly in keeping with the theme for this year’s Merdeka, Sehati Sejiwa, and testament to the strength of the ties between every Malaysian citizen.

Our Malaysian contingent has made history by bringing home a record total of five Olympic medals, and as we celebrate their efforts, let us take inspiration from this significant feat. Our individual achievements, put together, collectively form the foundation of the continued development of our beloved tanah air. We can each in our own way contribute to making Malaysia thrive.

Our diversity will always be our greatest strength, more so when we come together over a common bond. Let us all seek to embrace the core values of Merdeka and Malaysia as we mark this important day. Moderation, tolerance, acceptance are the foundation of our Rakyat’s sikap bertolak-ansur, both now and in the years to come.

Once again, Selamat Hari Merdeka, and have a restful holiday. To those who may be travelling, do be sure to stay safe on the road.
