Revisit strategy to combat denggi — Mohamed Rafick Khan
Malay Mail

AUG 27 — Based on the statistics released by MOH the number of denggi cases increased by 29 per cent for period of January 1 to August 8, 2015 compared to the corresponding period in 2014.

The 2015 numbers stands are 73,263 cases.

Numbers do not lie and clearly the numbers tell us that we are fighting a losing battle. This only means that the the strategies deployed from the  high level strategy to the operational strategy has failed.

There is a need to review the strategy and goals of the program.

While MOH is responsible for treatment of DF cases, the prevention of disease is not the sole responsibilities of the ministry.

It is pretty obvious that there is no concerted effort by the authorities. Every single authority is doing fire fighting on their own without a clear direction or objectives and targets. This is the primary reason of case escalation.

It is embarrassing that Malaysia with the experience of having successful in combating Malaria has failed to address DF as both are carried by mosquitoes.

There is a need to revisit laws, adequate empowerment to fine and enter premises to ensure that no breeding sites are found in houses.

The local council must be made accountable if breeding sites are found in the common areas within their controls.

A strategic review is required that not only involves change of strategy but also empowerment and accountability of the authority.

The YDP and council members must be made accountable for their failures. We need to move forward to zero breeding grounds.

The onus is on those empowered to do so at the very high level of the government to take action
