Khalid Abu Bakar should be cited for contempt of court — Teo Nie Ching

JUNE 11 — Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar should be cited for contempt of court for failing to return the children to the mothers who have the rightful custody of the children.

The decisions of the court are very clear. Custody of the children belongs to the mothers. It is the duty of the police to assist the court to execute the order. It is shocking for the IGP to openly say that they will not enforce the decisions of the two courts but will place the children in childcare centres. The statement of the IGP is making our judiciary system a mockery.

If there is any ambiguousness in the decisions of the courts, it is the duty of the police to seek clarifications or further direction from the court. It is not for the IGP to take the judicial power into his hands and decide what is “fair to those involved”.

Last week, the law minister Nancy Shurki has said last week that the police should take the child away from the father and return the child to the mother Deepa. Yet, we see no action from the IGP until today. Has our IGP become so arrogant that he takes instruction from no one, not even from a minister?

Any conduct that tends to bring the authority and the administration of the law into disrespect or disregards is contempt of court. To maintain the dignity and authority of our judges and courts, it is imperative not only to cite the fathers for contempt of court for their refusal to return to the children to the mothers, but also to cite the IGP so that no one will dare to take the order and decision of our court lightly in the future.
