VENICE, Jan 28 — Hundreds of revellers lined the narrow alleys and bridges of Venice yesterday (January 27) as carnival cheer exploded in the canal city.

Kicking off in the district of Rio di Cannergio, a water show called 'Lights, Camera, Action', based on a circus theme and inspired by legendary Italian film-maker Federico Fellini, was performed by spectacularly dressed participants on floating structures accompanied by music from Fellini's films.

The Carnevale di Venezia is among the oldest carnivals in the world. Carnival madness first began in the 11th century as a period of excess before the rigours of lent, the 40 days of fasting that traditionally precede Easter.

During the two weeks of carnival the city fills with thousands of tourists from across Italy and the world. Masked balls are held in ancient Venetian palaces, while concerts and gondola parades are organised in the piazzas and canals. This year's carnival runs until February 13. — Reuters
