VENICE, Jan 31 — Revellers wearing elaborate masks and costumes took over the water city of Venice as they celebrated the 2016 edition of one of the world’s oldest carnivals.

From dark and mysterious to downright adorable, costumed revellers sparkled in Italy yesterday for the Venice Carnival.

The pre-Lent festival features art, music and a local Venetian favourite, the traditional Procession of the Twelve Marias, a re-enactment of the liberation of 12 young women kidnapped by pirates.

It was first held in Venice in the 11th century and remains a staple celebration for locals.

The festival continues to draw visitors from all over the world keen to witness its festivities.
