BERLIN, Dec 19 — Not many days from now, the planet will bid farewell to 2015 and welcome 2016 with open arms. We’re taking a world tour of the big cities where the New Year is a major cause for celebration. Let’s take a look at what’s planned in Berlin, Germany.

Europe’s electronic music capital celebrates New Year in the company of its Berliners and guests in this cosmopolitan city that is known for throwing a good party. Over a million people will make their way to the area between Brandenburg Gate and Siegessaüle (Victory Column), which becomes a vast open-air dance floor roughly two kilometres long. Entry is free.

Live music performances and DJ sets give the celebrations a sonic backdrop until the small hours. Big stars who have played at the event in previous years include Bonnie Tyler, The Scorpions and The Pet Shop Boys. The party starts around midday, as visitors can watch the musicians rehearse on stage. The official kick-off is around 7pm. A range of stands offer food from around the world.

The fireworks start at midnight, and the party continues for many hours after that. There are also New Year celebrations all around the city.
