PARIS, Sept 7 — From celebrations marking the 38th birthday of an orangutan in Bali to spectacles of fireworks and the militaristic, these were among the highlights that drew photographers — professionals, amateurs but avid — the tourists and casual travelers over the week.

Bali

An orangutan named “Jacky”, who originated in Borneo, is pictured during celebrations marking its 38th birthday at Bali Zoo in Gianyar on the Indonesian resort island on September 4, 2015.

Orangutans, native to Borneo as well as Indonesia’s Sumatra island, are faced with extinction from poaching and the rapid destruction of their forest habitat, driven largely by land clearance for palm oil and paper plantations.

Mumbai

Baza, Spain

Every year on September 6 a villager from Guadix dresses as an oddball character called “Cascamorras” and travels the three kilometers to the village of Baza, flanked by a team of representatives, to stage an attempt to recapture the statue of the Virgen de la Piedad before returning to Guadix after three days to be punished by the locals for his failure.
