PARIS, Sept 3 — Between July 1 and August 31, an unprecedented total of 665,400 vehicles crossed the English Channel on the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle, according to a report unveiled by the company yesterday.
The figure represents an all-time record and a 4 percent increase over the same period in 2013. The Eurotunnel also set new daily records in August, when a total of 375,000 vehicles were transported during the month.
The previous daily record set on August 17, 2013 (15,982 vehicles) was surpassed three times during summer 2014: on August 2, 9 and 16. The new peak of 16,416 vehicles was reached on Saturday, August 9.
During the week of August 11 to 17 alone, the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle carried over 85,400 vehicles, “the highest number ever achieved in 20 years of operations,” according to the company.
As an amusing side note, the company also announced that “for the first time, the symbolic level of 1000 cats transported was passed (1,058 in one month).” — AFP-Relaxnews
