SAN FRANCISCO, June 20 — "Grand Theft Auto V” uptake appears unaffected by player protests, and eight remastered zombies maps for fan favorite "Call of Duty: Black Ops III” make it into the Steam top five best-sellers yesterday.

Publisher Take-Two Interactive is on a hot streak when it comes to shutting down unofficial mods for perennial best-seller "Grand Theft Auto V.”

Fan-made modification OpenIV was withdrawn by its creators after almost 10 years supporting "Grand Theft Auto IV” and then "Grand Theft Auto V.”

The tool prolonged the appeal of "GTA IV” by allowing users to overhaul its visuals and insert a number of community-made extras, replacing cars and characters with more powerful, more fantastical, or more bizarre alternatives.

Take-Two issued a cease and desist request which prompted OpenIV’s operators to stop distributing the tool, a move intended to protect "Grand Theft Auto Online” from unwanted interference but one which caused no small amount of umbrage — a bombardment of negative user reviews have caused "Grand Theft Auto V” to receive a recent assessment of Overwhelmingly Negative on its Steam store page.

Upset though a proportion of its existing player base may be, "Grand Theft Auto V” remains a proverbial money tree, remaining inside the Steam top five and achieving peak position on GameStop.

At least three other mod sites, including one that was charging users for its cheat-based services, have since said they will comply with separate Take-Two closure requests.

Meanwhile, the continued attraction of 2015’s "Call of Duty: Black Ops III” was evidenced when Activision published a set of legacy Zombies mode maps for the game; 2016’s sci-fi "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare” was less well received by committed fans and 2017’s "Call of Duty: WWII” has generated favor by returning to a historical setting.
