KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — The digital lifestyle is here to stay as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) aims to provide industry, society and academia the knowledge of the Internet of Things (IoT) and a creative and innovative platform for the myMaker community.

MCMC had launched a digital lifestyle initiative in 2012 encompassing transport, agriculture, healthcare, track and trace, retail and payment, smart cities ecosystem and other vertical industries by adopting Internet of Things.

Among others, it envisions consumers will in time be able to control various smart appliances in their homes via smart phones from wherever they are.

They will also be able to monitor the safety of agricultural produce from the farm to fork.

MCMC Technology and Society Division senior director Aisharuddin Nuruddin said the initiative was aimed at improving lives through the use of information and communications technology (ICT).

"We want to be able to allow people at home to get a clear idea of how their meat and vegetable produce arrive on their tables. This is one of our efforts to improve the safety of food we consume,” he said.

Aisharuddin said under the initiative the commission was creating value-added to the eco-systems for each of the focus areas to promote the use of IoT and digital applications.

He said the creative and innovative platform for the community was to share ideas based on the concept of ‘Internet of Things’. This would involve devices, vehicles, buildings embedded with sensors, software, actuators and network connectivity that allows these objects to collect and exchange data which will be useful for analytic and business decision later on.

"This concept would enable the public to learn and experiment with new systems while pushing for a smart digital nation communities and industries,” he said.

"The three components — network sensors, data storage and analytic engines — will help strengthen the usage of the applications to boost the smart system within the community,” he said.

Aisharuddin said the diversity of the smart systems in various fields would boost the economy as the convenience of consumers was a priority.

He said improved productivity and sustainability would boost the digital lifestyle of Malaysians and change their way of life.

"If there are greater efforts to promote the adoption of ICT services, an essential change would be seen in no time,” he said.

"MCMC myMaker is a platform for the society to meet, share and learn, and it is also a platform to instil creative and innovative communities with the support involvement of maker communities and industries,” said John Tay, director of MCMC Digital Lifestyle and Society Department.

He added, "myMaker Association and industries with support from MCMC will be engaging with communities in creating interest in S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) at the early age to support the country towards a smart digital nation.  The maker communities is the grassroots in IoT in order to ensure the successful adoption of the Internet of Things in the business, create entrepreneurship and enhance our quality digital lifestyle.”
