RIO DE JANEIRO, May 20 — If you’re heading to Brazil this summer in the hopes of seeing the World Cup, but are worried about trying to find a ticket for a match, don’t worry, Globo and Sony have joined forces to offer a suitably high-tech solution.

The country’s largest broadcaster, Globo is planning to erect huge, 65-inch ultra-high-definition TVs in the Jardim Botanico area of Rio de Janeiro to give fans another way of coming together to see the world’s most popular single sporting event and, of course to give them a glimpse of the TV of the future at the same time.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Jose Manuel Marino, the TV network’s head of technology for sports, described the initiative as a way of giving fans a look into the future of television and revealed that broadcasting the tournament in all levels of definition requires a team of over 2500 professionals spread across Brazil.

No doubt, the biggest excitement will be in fans seeing their country progress in the month-long tournament (only to go out on penalties in the quarter finals of course in the case of the England team). However, by offering a viewing resolution four times greater than standard definition, seeing games broadcast live in UHD is also bound to cause a stir, as the images are almost as sharp and clear as looking out of a window.

The screens and the broadcast technology are being provided by Sony and the intention is to screen just three matches in the format including the final.

Visiting supporters in Brazil won’t be the only football fans that will get a taste of the sport they love in ultra-high definition. Japan has pledged to broadcast the World Cup final to the country’s households in UHD (providing they have a UHDTV of course) and South Korea already has its UHDTV broadcast network up and running. — AFP/Relaxnews
