KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 — Top national women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah and two men’s doubles pairs secured their berths in the quarter-finals of the French Open after clearing their round-of-16 hurdles early this morning.
In the men’s doubles, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun produced a stellar display to stun Japan’s eighth seeds Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi in straight games, 25-23, 21-14.
The win not only levelled their head-to-head record against the 2021 world champions at 2-2 but also set up an all-Malaysian quarter-final clash against top national pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik.
Also advancing to the last eight were professional duo Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who were pushed to the limit before edging Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard-Mads Vestergaard 21-6, 14-21, 21-18 after bouncing back in the decider.
A formidable challenge awaits Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin in the quarter-finals, where they will take on South Korea’s world number one pair Kim Won-ho-Seo Seung-jae, to whom they have lost four of their six previous meetings.
The South Koreans had earlier ended the campaign of young Malaysian pair Aaron Tai-Yap Roy King with a 21-14, 21-16 victory.
In the women’s doubles, Pearly-Thinaah were forced to fend off a spirited challenge from younger compatriots Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting before prevailing 21-14, 22-20.
Pearly-Thinaah will next meet Bulgaria’s Gabriela Stoeva- Stefani Stoeva for a place in the semi-finals. — Bernama
