KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 — Vietnam retained the Asean Championship title after drawing 2-2 with Thailand to complete a 4-2 aggregate victory at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi last night.

Leading 2-0 from the first leg in Bangkok, the hosts fell behind when midfielder Yotsakon Burapha scored for Thailand in the 12th minute.

Thailand, seven-time champions missed a golden opportunity to draw level on aggregate when midfielder Kakana Khamyok sent his penalty over the bar three minutes after the restart before goalkeeper Chatchai Bootprom’s own goal four minutes later restored Vietnam’s two-goal cushion in the tie.

Substitute Wanchai Jarunongkran put Thailand 2-1 ahead on the night in the 84th minute but his stoppage-time own goal secured Vietnam a draw.

It is Vietnam’s fourth Asean title after their triumphs in 2008, 2018 and 2024.

In the previous edition’s final, Vietnam defeated the same opponents 5-3 on aggregate. — Bernama
