TAIPEI, Aug 2 — Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah’s bid to end Malaysia’s long wait for a women’s doubles title at the Taipei Open ended in disappointment today after they were beaten in straight games by Japan’s Sumire Nakade and Miyu Takahashi.

The world No. 5 Malaysians, who entered the World Tour Super 300 tournament as the top seeds, went down 16-21, 18-21 in 40 minutes at the Taipei Arena.

The defeat means Malaysia’s wait for its first women’s doubles crown at the tournament continues.

Pearly-Thinaah had entered the final hoping to become the first Malaysian pair to lift the title since the competition began more than four decades ago.

Their run to the final had offered encouragement after a difficult period in which Pearly was sidelined for two months following an injury in May.

The Malaysians had booked their place in the title decider by beating Americans Francesca Corbett and Jennie Gai 21-15, 21-17 in Saturday’s semi-final.

That victory was their third successive win over the American pair and kept alive hopes of a second title this year.

Pearly-Thinaah’s only triumph so far this season came at the Indonesia Masters in January.

But the Japanese pair, ranked below the Malaysian duo, proved too strong in the final and denied Pearly-Thinaah a long-awaited Taipei Open breakthrough.
