GLASGOW, July 29 — The Malaysian contingent has met its five-gold medal target for the 2026 Commonwealth Games after para long jump T20 world record holder Datuk Abdul Latif Romly delivered the country’s fifth gold tonight.

The last gold medal, which Abdul Latif won on his third jump of 7.17 metres (m) in raining and cold conditions at Scotstoun Stadium, was also accompanied by a bronze medal by compatriot Eljoe Gotuoh, who jumped 6.51 m.

Earlier in the day, weightlifter Muhammad Hafizuddin Roslin had secured Malaysia’s fourth gold in the men’s 88 kilogramme (kg) category.

The 22-year-old managed a combined lift of 345 kg - 162 kg in the snatch and 183 kg in the clean and jerk - both new Games records, in his Commonwealth Games debut.

Malaysia also secured two silver medals today, courtesy of lawn bowlers Aleena Ahmad Nawawi-Syafiqa Haidar Afif Abdul Rahman in the women’s pairs event and Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple in the men’s singles.

Aleena-Syafiqa won the first lawn bowls silver of the day, losing to England’s Amy Pharaoh-Sian Honnor in the final, while Izzat Shameer, who became the first Malaysian to win a medal in his event, lost to England’s Sam Tolchard. 

Syafiqa, who is five-months pregnant, described the silver medal as the most meaningful gift for her baby and her.

Also in lawn bowls, world number one Emma Firyana Saroji and the men’s pair of Amirul Danial Abdul Rahim and Mohammad Soufi Rusli won their first match in the women’s singles and men’s pairs events respectively today.

Luck was not on the side of all Malaysian athletes today, as artistic gymnast Muhammad Sharul Aimy Kamaru Hisam missed out on a medal when he finished fourth in a tie-break after recording the same overall points with bronze medallist Neofytos Kyriakou of Cyprus in the men’s vault today.

Malaysia is currently sixth in medal rankings after today’s haul, with five gold, two silver and three bronze medals, while Australia leads the table with 35 gold, 18 silver and 27 bronze, ahead of second-placed Canada (13,10,12) and third-placed England (10,18,15). — Bernama
