GLASGOW, July 26 — Malaysian athletes had both successes and failures as they competed in swimming, para swimming, lawn bowling, artistic gymnastics and 3x3 wheelchair basketball on the second day of the 2026 Commonwealth Games here yesterday.

In swimming, para swimmer Ethan Khoo Yin Jun finished fourth in the men’s 200 metre (m) freestyle with a time of 2 minutes 5.25 seconds (s), while four able-bodied Malaysian swimmers – Khiew Hoe Yean, Tan Khai Xin, Lim Yin Chuen and Arvin Shaun Singh Chahal – failed to make it pass their heats at Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

Hoe Yean finished 10th overall out of 27 participants with a time of 3.54.23 s, and Khai Xin placed 14th with a time of 3.57.54 s in the men’s 400 m freestyle event, while Yin Chuen and Arvin were joint 28th out of 68 swimmers in the men’s 50 m freestyle.

Meanwhile, the men’s 3x3 wheelchair basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss in their opening Group B match against Wales, who beat them 13-14 in the dying moments of the game at Scottish Event Campus (SEC).

Good news came from lawn bowling, as men’s singles player Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple and the women’s pair of Aleena Ahmad Nawawi-Syafiqa Haidar Afif Abdul Rahman enjoyed their third consecutive win in the group stage yesterday, while women’s artistic gymnast Rachel Yeoh advanced to the uneven bars final after placing third out of 49 gymnasts in the qualifying round at Glasgow International Arena.

Today (July 26), the focus will fall on weightlifting, as two defending champions, Mohamad Aniq Kasdan and Muhamad Aznil Bidin begin their gold medal defence at SEC Armadilo.

Mohamad Aniq will compete in the men’s 60 kilogramme (kg) category, while Mohamad Aznil will be looking for his third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men’s 65 kg category.

The swim team of Hoe Yean, Arvin Shaun, Yin Chuen and Khai Xin will get another chance to shine when they compete in the men’s 4x200 m freestyle relay race.

Malaysia has currently one bronze medal courtesy of powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin in the men’s lightweight category. — Bernama
