HANGZHOU, Oct 25 — Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) president Datuk Seri Megat D Shahriman Zaharuddin was today elected as South-east Asia’s sub-regional representative on the Asian Paralympic Committee (AsPC) Executive Board.

The 40-year-old won a three-cornered contest against National Paralympic Committee (NPC) of the Philippines president Michael Barredo and NPC Singapore president Dr Teo-Koh Sock Miang in the election held here in conjunction with the ongoing Asian Para Games.

Megat D Shahriman, a member of the Asean Para Sports Federation (APSF) Board of Governors, will serve a four-year term (2023-2027) as the region’s representative to the AsPC Executive Committee.

APSF president Major Gen Osoth Bhavilai said Megat D Shahriman will act as a bridge between the two bodies in terms of various activities and policies for the para movement in Asia.

"Congratulations to Datuk Seri Megat for being elected as the new Southeast Asia representative. The APSF looks forward to continuously being actively involved in the empowerment of para-athletes, activities and plans in the region in the next four years and beyond,” he said in a statement.

Presidents and representatives from all 11 Southeast Asian NPCs voted in the election, which was overseen by the AsPC’s Legal and Ethics Committee chaired by Ng Keng Chuan.

The other regional representatives elected included Farrukh Akhmedov of Uzbekistan for Central Asia; Gursharan Singh of India for South Asia; and Dr Abdelrazaq Banirasheed of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for West Asia. — Bernama
