PETALING JAYA, May 21 — Spanish striker David Villa said Spain’a attacking options should not be an issue at the 2018 World Cup.
The 36-year-old is confident of his countrymen’s abilities in Russia next month.
"They have enough strikers to put on a proper show at the tournament.
"No one is certain how a country will perform, but I know Spain will mount a strong challenge at this year’s edition,” said the New York City forward.
Villa deemed himself available for selection after making a U-turn on his decision to retire from international football last year.
He has yet to receive a call-up and by the looks of it, manager Julen Lopetegui might end up choosing Diego Costa, Iago Aspas, Rodrigo Moreno and Alvaro Morata in the attacking department.
Spain’s last game saw them whip six goals past Argentina but La Roja has come short in front of goal when it matters most — only managing a goal each against Germany, Italy and Croatia.
Villa said despite the country’s uncertainty in recent times they should have what it takes to win the World Cup.
"There are no star players in the Spain team — even in the 2010 team.
"The star of the squad has always been the chemistry of the team, and this will be enough to see them win the World Cup,” he said during a phone interview with Malay Mail.
Villa was a key member of the 2010 Spain team that won the World Cup.
He scored five of Spain’s eight goals at the tournament and won the Silver Shoe, losing out to Golden Shoe winner Thomas Muller only by fewer assists.
Villa’s achievements during his World Cup journey will be shown on Astro’s History channel 555/575(HD) from May 28 to June 4 along with other historic moments from previous editions of the tournament.
"The feeling of winning the World Cup and being there itself is the highlight of my career.
"Fans will get a chance to know more about the history of football as it is important to learn and love the sport.”
The former Barcelona striker bagged his 400th career goal last month — only the fourth player to do so — and said there is no secret to his prowess.
"I try to change my style and my game every day to ensure I can be at the top of my game at all times.”
Spain are in Group B together with Portugal, Morocco and Iran.
They get their Russia campaign underway against Portugal on June 16.
