PETALING JAYA, Feb 4 — Consecutive birdies on the last two holes helped India’s Subhankar Sharma lift the title at the third edition of the Maybank Championship  at the Saujana Golf and Country Club in Subang, today.

In today’s final round, the 21-year-old overcome a four-shot deficit with a consistent display in windy and hot weather, shooting a flawless round of 10-under-par 62 for a winning total of 21-under-par 267.

The 21-year-old pocketed US$500,000 (about RM2 million) and received the prestigious championship trophy from Maybank Group President and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Abdul Farid Alias and Chairman Datuk Mohaiyani Shamsudin.

"I’m happy that I did not make any bogeys in today’s round and was very satisfied about it. The last two holes worked out well and turned out to be very fantastic to me,” said Subhankar, who turned pro in 2013.

"I played pretty solid and it wasn’t easy because it was windy. I kept pushing the whole day. I knew I had to make a lot birdies to catch the leaders. I made a lot of birdies in the front nine and just continued on the back (nine).

"To be honest, I wasn’t thinking about the leaderboard. I wanted to set a target in my mind and try to achieve it. On the 13th I knew I was somewhere near the leaders but on 16, I knew I had a two-shot lead. I told myself that if I can make two more birdies, that would give me a good chance to win,” he added.

The Maybank Championship win is his second Asian Tour and European Tour sanctioned tournament title after winning the Joburg Open last December.

The victory also moved him to the top of the Asian Tour’s Habitat for Humanity Standings and on the Race to Dubai on the European Tour.

"The last two months have changed my life. I’ve been a member on the Asian Tour for a while and I will continue to be a member on the Asian Tour. I’ve always dreamt of winning and now I’m a two-time winner on the Asian Tour and European Tour,” he said.

Meanwhile co-overnight leader Jorge Campillo of Spain, eagled the opening hole before returning with a 68 to settle for second place with a 269 total.

"I started really good. I started good in the first eight holes then I missed my drive on the ninth hole. After that I made some good up-and-downs and gave myself some birdie chances. I finished good so I’m happy with that. I knew he had to shoot low but not that low.

"It was windy and it was quite tricky out there. It is tough to beat someone who shoots a 10-under. I kept trying and I’ve finished second way too many times. I finish by myself so that’s quite positive. I’m very happy with that,” said Campillo.

Campillo started the day four shots ahead of Sharma and when he put his approach to the first to four feet for an eagle, he was two clear of the field.

Meanwhile, his compatriot Pablo Larrazabal shared third place with New Zealand’s Ryan Fox with identical 18-under-par 270. — Bernama
