KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24 — National top men’s doubles pair, Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong led the country’s charge to the second round in the Indonesia Masters Badminton Tournament in Jakarta, Indonesia, today.
The 2016 Rio Olympics silver medallists defeated Mathias Christiansen/David Daugaard of Denmark;winning in 21-18 and 21-13 in their opening round match at Istora Senayan, according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website.
National men’s doubles pair, Chooi Kah Ming-Low Juan Shen, however, had to dig deep into their reserves before defeating another Danish pair, Kasper Antonsen-Niclas Nohr; 21-18, 19-21 and 21-17.
Another Malaysian pair, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Muhd Rumsani were knocked out from the competition after losing 21-19, 12-21 and 12-21 to Rian Agung Saputro/Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia.
The country’s interest in the women’s doubles, however, fizzled out after the only pair in the tournament, Vivian Hoo Kah Mun/Woon Khe Wei lost 9-21 and 16-21 to the third seeds, Kamilla Rytter Juhl/Christinna Pedersen of Denmark.
Meanwhile, national mixed doubles pair, Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei who came from the qualifying round were knocked out from the competition after losing 23-25, 23-21 and 18-21 to Wang Chi-Lin/Lee Chia Hsin of Taiwan.
The scratch pair of Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif-Rusydina Antardayu Riodingin (Malaysia-Indonesia) also faced the same fate after they were beaten by Rinov Rivaldy-Angelica Wiratama of Indonesia;losing 21-17, 12-21 and 12-21.
Two Malaysian singles players — Chong Wei Feng (men) and Goh Jin Wei (women) will be on action later today. — Bernama
