KUALA KUBU BARU, Oct 21 — The wheel has come full circle for Elmi Jumari of PDRM-G Cycling Team (Malaysia Royal Police) when he secured his second win by taking stage four (Shah Alam-Kuala Kubu Baru) in Tour de Selangor yesterday.
"Told you, I will do it again,” he shouted soon as he crossed the finish line and bobbing his head to single out his coach in the crowd.
The 27-year-old Lance Corporal who joined the police force in 2013 and has been riding for their road team ever since, disclosed that his coach Manjit Singh was the one who triggered his rush of adrenaline.
"To be honest, he (Manjit) never gave me any advice or encouragement... believe me or not, what he did was ribbing me non stop. He only congratulated me that ‘I was good’ when I won stage two (Shah Alam-Dengkil). That was the very first time he ever said something nice but because of that, I thank him because his style made me eager to prove that I can do it. Now I’ve done it again,” said Elmi, laughing.
Elmi, who started out as a BMX rider in 2004, had clinched his inaugural stage win in a Tour race at second stage of Tour de Selangor, on Wednesday.
In a bunched sprint finish to time in at 2:04:05 yesterday, Elmi took the lead while senior rider Zamri Saleh of Terengganu Cycling Team and Saufi Mat Senan of Sitra Kelantan State Cycling Team came in second and third respectively.
Manjit then grinned at Elmi saying "I’m an old man, my style is always old-school”. He explained how he treats all his chargers and is glad that Elmi has proven to be promising rider.
Elmi from Selayang Baru also revealed that yesterday’s route was like the back of his hand. "The route is at my home town and so it was like my playland. That was my advantage. As for tomorrow’s race (fifth stage), I will fight for another win as the route suits a sprinter. I’m a sprint specialist so I will try to get another happy ending for the team,” he said, while taking over the Blue Jersey (Sprint) from Team Sapura Cycling ace rider Zawawi Azman yesterday.
Today will see the fifth and final stage of Tour de Selangor with the 112.2-km race starting and ending at Dataran Shah Alam.
