Jun Hao advances to quarter-final of World Junior Badminton meet

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 — National junior shuttler Leong Jun Hao continued his sizzling performance by advancing to the last eight of the World Junior Badminton Championships in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, today.

The 4th seeded player defeated the 15th seed, Leo Rossi of France, winning 21-16 and 21-17 in the fifth round in the boys singles held at Gor Amongrogo Sports Arena, according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website www.bwfbadminton.com.

Former world junior champion Goh Jin Wei also made it to the next round by defeating 16th seed, Choirunnisa Choirunnisa of Indonesia 21-15 and 21-19, but her teammate, Eoon Qi Xuan, was eliminated from the tournament after losing 6-21 and 8-21 to the top seed, Pattarasuda Chaiwan of Thailand.

Malaysia's interest in the girls doubles fizzled out after the only pair left standing, the 6th seed Pearly Tan Le Koong/Toh Ee Wei suffered an unexpected defeat, losing 21-19, 10-21 and 15-21 to the 10th seed, Xia Yuting/Zhang Shuxian of China.

Two Malaysian mixed doubles pair — the 9th seed, Ng Eng Cheong/Toh Ee Wei and Man Wei Chong/Tan Sueh Jeou — faced a contrasting fates in the fifth round.

Ng/Toh pulled off a surprise by defeating the 7th seed, Ruttanapak Oupthong/Chasinee Korepap of Thailand 21-17 and 21-18, while Man/Tan was shown the exit after losing 21-19, 22-24, 13-21 to Daniel Lundgaard/Amalie Magelund of Denmark.

Also made it to the next round were Kwek Yee Jian/Man Wei Chong who edged their teammate, Chia Wei Jie/Tee Kai Wun  21-14 and 21-14 in the boys doubles. — Bernama
