KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia is capable of hosting another Commonwealth Games especially once Phase two of Sports City is ready.
That was Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tunku Imran Ja’afar’s answer when asked on the matter yesterday after he chaired their monthly executive board meeting.
"Under the Commonwealth banner there are 10 compulsory sports in there which we traditionally excel at,” said Tunku Imran.
"It would make a lot of sense for Malaysia to host the 2022 Games but it would be up to the government and their ability to absorb the finances.”
Durban was stripped of the right to stage the 2022 Commonwealth Games on Monday after a trail of missed deadlines and financial problems that highlights the daunting burdens facing host cities of major sporting events.
The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) said the South African city did not abide by promises contained in its bid and the search for a replacement host is on.
"Durban’s federal government was not forthcoming and the financial guarantees that were originally given were broken,” said Tunku Imran on the reasons for the cancellation.
"It may be too soon for us to host a Commonwealth Games especially after the SEA Games in August, but with the facilities we have we could definitely host it.”
Meanwhile, there will be an ad-hoc arbitration panel consisting of one member from each South-east Asian nation to help dispute legal issues arising from the SEA Games.
The reason for this commission is to set a precedent for future standards of production.
