KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 25 — After narrowly avoiding relegation last year, Pahang are now sitting pretty in second place after five matches in the Super League.

They have won three, drawn one and lost one, amassing 10 points, one short of league leaders Kedah.

Incidentally, their only loss came against the defending Malaysia Cup champions, Kedah, which was a 4-1 defeat at Stadium Darul Aman on Feb 11.

The Elephants bounced back by thumping a hapless Penang 6-1. It was their biggest margin of victory and followed a 5-0 drubbing of T-Team earlier in the season.

Captain and naturalised player Matthew Davies feels the team have the momentum going into their next game against Melaka United but is wary of being complacent.

"It’s still early days so it’s important not to get carried away,” warned the 22-year-old.

"The team are responding well to Dollah’s coaching style and tactics,” added Davies, commenting on new head coach Dollah Salleh.

Pahang’s import players are proving a handful to opponents. All four have got on the scoresheet.

Their Brazilian striker Matheus Alves Leandro is joint top scorer with four goals.

Against T-Team they showcased their worth when Alves scored two while American Chinedu Dike, South Korean Heo Jae-won and Gambian Mohamadou Sumareh added a goal each.

This avidity for the net has culminated in Pahang plundering 14 goals while conceding only six.

Melaka have fewer rest days before facing Pahang as they have played their replacement match, postponed earlier due to bad weather, against Kelantan on Tuesday.

"Hopefully, we can use the fact they have had to play midweek to our advantage,” said Davies.

"It will still be a difficult game but the extra few days of rest and recovery put us in good position to pick up full points,” remarked the rightback.
