KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 2 — Mohamad Faiz Subri has made it to the final shortlist for Fifa’s goal of the year with his physics-defying free kick.
Videos of the Penang striker’s curved kick during the Malaysian Super League match against Pahang last February went viral and turned him into an instant football sensation.
The 29-year-old is Malaysia’s first Fifa Puskas award nominee.
Some football fans have compared it to Brazilian Roberto Carlos swerving ball against France in 1997.
The other two Fifa Puskas Award 2016 finalists are Brazilian Johnath Marlone and Venezuelan Daniuska Rodriguez.
Fans of Faiz still have another shot to increase his chances of taking the crown.
A second round of voting is now open on Fifa.com until January 9, 2017 and the award presentation ceremony will be held in Zurich, Switzerland the same day.
The results from this final round of voting will be added to the first to determine the overall winner.
